The ISPA Competent Crew - Power Course is the first step in your ISPA boating training journey. This course provides the basic knowledge essentials for operating a power boat and the must knows for living aboard a cruising power boat. Once registered, the ISPA Competent Crew Power Certificate of Competency certifies the holder to; a) Crew aboard a power vessel in tidal waters with a Skipper onboard, and b) Skipper a power vessel under 40 feet where no navigational hazards exist, within inland waters, or safe harbours during daylight hours, in light to moderate wind conditions.
COURSE COSTS: The ISPA Competent Crew PRIVATE Power Course with Latitude Sailing is $1995 CAD (plus theory materials) and includes the completion of the Restricted Operator Certificate Maritime (ROCM) exam while onboard at no additional cost. If a couple wished to complete their training together (shared cabin), the cost for both is $2950 CAD (plus theory materials). Theory materials are not included as there are options for your theory development depending on if you choose a physical manual or online training options.
VESSEL REQUIREMENTS: Latitude Sailing conducts our Power Boat training courses either on YOUR PERSONAL VESSEL or a LOCALLY CHARTERED VESSEL that you have chartered for the duration of the course. In either option, the vessel will need to be approved by Transport Canada and included as part of our training vessels. While there is no cost for this, there is a period of time that is needed to complete the Transport Canada approval and to ensure that the vessel has all the required equipment to be used in your training course. You can download a copy of the required equipment list by CLICKING HERE to evaluate if your vessel would be appropriate for the training program.
If you are looking at chartering a power boat to use in your training, I would suggest that you contact Nanaimo Yacht Charters. You can view their vessels available to charter at the following URL (https://www.nanaimoyachtcharters.com/boat-listing/). If you have any questions please let us know.
ON-THE-WATER TIME: The course involves 4 training days on-the-water. These days can be completed over 2 weekend/weekday sessions of days each (if a Nanaimo departure), or can be completed in a single 4 day block. By completing your training over a 4 day block it allows for a greater variety of destinations and departure points for your training. A minimum of 20 hours on-the-water time is required.
COMBINED COURSES: It is possible to complete your 'Competent Crew', 'ROC(m)', 'Day Skipper' and 'Coastal Navigation' as a complete package over 7 consecutive on-the-water days at a savings of 25% over completing the courses individually ($3295 CAD per Individual or $4795 CAD per Couple plus theory materials). The focused time allows you to build your skills more effectively and allows for a greater customization of training plans.
CHALLENGING CERTIFICATION: Qualified individuals may request the opportunity to challenge the Competent Crew Power Course. Participants wishing to take this path will need to provide documented evidence during 'Step 01' of at least 10 days experience, 200 NM, and living aboard as crew on a power boat in tidal waters. Challenge Participants will need to complete the Physical Workbook or Online Course including successfully completing the theory assessment. During the On-The-Water component of the course, the Challenge Participant will need to demonstrate all of the skills of the ISPA Competent Crew Power Course. The cost for the Certificate Challenge will be based on the number of days required to complete the evaluation and will be $700 CAD per day.
